<image:title>Atina Coates - Welcome to our new Artistic Director</image:title>
<image:caption>Atina Marie Coates was born in Driggs, Idaho. Her first interest in choral conducting was at the early age of 4 watching her mother conduct their local church choir where Coates would hide under the table to conduct. Music, playing the piano, and singing were an essential part of her youth and high school experiences. By the age of 19, Coates was conducting her first church congregational singing and choir. Coates has enjoyed many years of service in music to both the community and her church. Coates earned her Bachelor of Music Education K-12 degree from Brigham Young University-Idaho in 2006. While earning her degree, Coates conducted under Dr. Randall Kempton as one of his student assistants in the University Choir. Coates spent 3 semesters with mentor Kendell Nielsen teaching music theory and editing a theory textbook. After graduating with her bachelor’s, Coates continued her voice education by studying voice with Kristine Ciesinski for 12 years. During that time, Coates also studied voice with Drs. Jon Linford and Andrew Gilchrist. Teaching voice in both a group and one on one setting has been an important part of her career. Continuing her love of choral art, Coates studied conducting under Drs. Kevin Brower, Rebecca Lord, and Dallin Hansen. Coates was one of four conductors of the Rexburg Upper Valley Women’s Choir in 2010 and was hired at Brigham Young University-Idaho in 2011 to teach voice and direct the Women’s Chorus (then called the Women’s Glee choir). Coates is now in her eleventh-year teaching at BYU-Idaho, where she has been privileged to work with thousands of students. Coates was recently named the new Artistic Director for Anam Cara Chamber Choir in Idaho Falls, Idaho. She joined Anam Cara as a singer in 2014 and served as president of the non-profit choir from 2016-2020. Coates loves collaborating with other musicians and eagerly anticipates this opportunity to interact with the community is this new role. The joy Coates feels sharing her love and passion for music is a hallmark of her years in music. Coates is married to Dan Coates. Together they have four children and four grandchildren.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Music has always been a part of my life! Both of my parents love music and fostered that love of music in me and my siblings. Even so, it was a little bit of a shock when I made the change from my intended course of study, nursing, to music! I studied music at Ricks College and graduated with a Bachelor of Music from Utah State University with a K-12 teaching certification. While at Utah State I studied voice with Mary Shearer from the Utah Festival Opera. I was the Director of Choral Music at Davis Middle School in Evanston, Wyoming for 3 years before marrying my best friend, Matthew, and starting our family. We now have seven children, six with us and one angel in heaven. We have chosen to homeschool our family so every day is an adventure! I was involved for many years as a teacher, Board Member, and MAT(Music, Art, Theater) Camp Director for Young Musicians, Inc (now The Arts, Inc) in Evanston, Wyoming. I sang with and served as Assistant Director for the American West Chamber Singers in Murray, Utah from 2012-2014, and have been a member of Anam Cara since 2017. I love my family, my faith, my freedom, my friends, music, mentoring, nature, reading, and how I feel when I run (not while I’m actually running, but how I feel in general when I run on a regular basis).</image:caption>

<image:caption>Julia’s singing career began in junior high with the Idaho State University music director and Opera Tenor Greg Ashbaker, and she participated in the ISU production of Fiddler On The Roof. During high school Julia attended The Interlochen Music school in Michigan. During that time, she was accepted into the World Symphony Orchestra and Choir (WSOC) and she participated in Brigadoon. While in high school, Julia experienced singing with the famous Gate City Singers in the productions of StarChild, Zion’s and also sang with The Barber Shop Choir and Sweet Adeline’s. Julia provided entertainment as a singer for the Foresters Insurance Group and the Fraternal Order Of The MasonicTemples, in Portland, Oregon. After relocating back to Idaho, Julia sang with the Idaho Falls Opera Company for one year. She sang under the direction of composer Kurt Bestor in his Bestor Christmas and with Michael McClain singing The Forgotten Christmas Carols. Julia has enjoyed being a member of Anam Cara for the last several years and currently serves as the Vice President. Julia enjoys singing, playing the piano, and being part of a group or volunteering for activities where she can give the gift of music - funeral services, weddings, church functions, and conducting children’s groups. Music is part of her soul and she lets it shine!</image:caption>
